'Other' Login OptionSeptember 15, 2006 - 10:46am
Geo asks: QuestionOn my login screen I have a user named “Other.” I don’t know where it came from and how to get rid of it. I have tried to login with my Admin and user passwrods, but they don’t work. You can find this example here: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a5/GeoK_sc/OtherUser.jpg Can you help me get this damn thing off my Mac? Thanks a bunch! Answer“Other…” appears on your login window when enabled by the existence of odd UID users, when toggled by an OS X Server on your subnet, and by a small collection of other factors. It often shows up when you’ve enabled the Root user in NetInfo Manager. Older versions of OS X even had a toggle in the Accounts prefpane to enable and disable this item directly. Unfortunately, all this means is that you need to think carefully about what you’ve done in the past that may have triggered its existence. About JC |

If there’s a NetInfo or LDAP server on your network and your DHCP packet is giving you this information, it would cause the same thing. Are you on a network that someone else administers?
This will also appear if you have the “Root” user enabled in “Netinfo Manager”
which i mentioned. in the second sentence.
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow SHOWOTHERUSERS_MANAGED -bool false
